Why does every girl think she’s Geet from Jab We Met?
Our unhealthy obsession with red flags: Geet and Bunny
Hiiiiiiiiii!
So I'm back! Yay. Okay, that sounded sarcastic, but I am back and I wrote something. This is different than everything I've ever written because for one it's not a rant. It's just me thinking and giving an opinion. Anyway, hope you enjoy it. Even if you don't let me know in the comments. Yes please use that to increase my user engagement or substack stats. Wait, that's so funny sub-stack stats. Okay, I promise I'm not drunk or high, just sleep-deprived, burdened with projects and exam-stressed. Here you go.
Why does every girl think she is Geet from Jab We Met? Even though she and everyone around her know she isn’t.
Geet is the most relatable character in Bollywood for women. Why is that? She’s not the prettiest, richest, smartest, kindest, nicest, nothing. She’s just average. But so are a lot of other characters. Take Naina from Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewaani for instance; she’s smart, pretty and nice. They have common traits. Then why is it that everyone relates to Geet and not Naina?
Maybe because Geet is free? I mean, she does whatever the hell she wants, speaks her mind and loves who she likes. She has control of her life. That’s something all of us want too. We just can’t. We’re restricted by our circumstances, conditions and personalities. We wish we were her. That’s why we relate so deeply to her. Living vicariously through Geet, because internally that’s how we think and behave. Bubbly, overly optimistic, fearless, persistent, attracted to red flag Anshumans and probably the best ‘Main apni favourite hoon’.
In retrospect, Geet isn’t the green flag we think. She’s moody, kind of selfish, impulsive and a dreamer (not in a good way).
From running away from her home to pushing Aditya’s boundaries, getting off a train and making him drop her home; none of these are safe or the right behaviour.
But that’s what makes it a movie, the fiction. She doesn’t think about the consequences and does what she wants. In reality, don’t we all? So yes, while all of us relate to Geet; it’s good that we’re not, because who knows we might just end up kidnapped or trafficked.
For men, it's Bunny from YJHD. Same concept. Selfish, free, street-smart, doesn't give a damn, does what he wants, speaks his mind, gets both the girl and the career and is quite attractive.
'Main udna chahta hoon, daudna chahta hoon, girna bhi chahta hoon, bus rukna nahi chahta.'
I've heard several guys say that they will hook up with anyone, but when they love, it has to be real. Their past then is inconsequential. It's the same with Bunny, he tells Naina that he can only love her, even though he messes around with someone else on the trip. Hypocritical much?
'Tumhare jaisi ladkiyaan flirting ke liye nahi, Ishq ke liye bani hain.'
We need to live through these comfort characters because even though we so desperately want to be them, in reality, we don't want to turn into them. In the end, Bunny too settles down with Naina; the very thing he swore he wouldn't do. Why? Because jitna bhi hakka noodles kha lo, in the end, toh dal chawal se hi dil bharta hain.
My favourite line though:
'Teri smile kitni dangerous hai pata hai. Mere paas dil hota toh pakka aa jata ispe.'
Okay, I'll end the post on that note. Let me know what you think. As always, don't forget to like, share, comment and subscribe. Now this sounds like a YouTube video, I'm going. See you in the next post, bye! Take care and stay happy!
Experience have taught me to stay away from girls that think they're geet🙏🏻🙏🏻
